Holding attention is important for entrepreneurs. It has to be cultivated deliberately. And one easy way is to start writing. Because writing requires you to be patient with yourself. You have to spend time to think, write, erase, write again, edit and then finally finish it. The process requires your full attention. You cannot be listening to music while writing. You have to live with your thoughts and listen to it rather. You have to convert your thoughts into words and write them. You have to move your finger muscles to type. All of these take up deliberate effort. Writing is a great exercise to cultivate this habit. It helps you increase your attention holding span gradually.

Holding your attention requires you to slow down, drop into the current moment -- into whatever you are doing right now -- and to deliberately go about the task at hand. Be it looking through the menu at a restaurant, watching the score during a cricket match, writing an email or squaring your books at the end of the week.

Many people these days complain that they cannot hold their attention more than a few moments. They are either distracted or bored. Distraction can be managed and boredom is a good thing, so I don't see them as issues. Holding your attention is not an external factor. Holding your attention is internal to you.

In today's age we are living in a series of momentary states in search of something momentous. We are given to believe that momentary is being in the moment. It is actually not. Being in the moment is to slow down, savour the details, spend time and to look around you to share your joy and happiness.

You can start right away. Try this: How long can you hold your breath? Or your attention for that matter. Did you know that you can hold your attention for much longer than you can hold your breath. Try and test it for yourself.
